Story Inspiration

Pretty in Pink

Inspiration can come from anywhere. A news headline, a photograph, or an experience we go through. Everything and anything is a potential source of inspiration.

Case in point, a couple of weeks ago when I was watching Pretty In Pink for the 736th time, I had an “aha” moment. I thought to myself, what would happen if Andie were rich and Blane were poor? Then I thought, what if it took place in a modern-day small town? I asked myself a couple more “what if” questions, then I had the idea to try and write a reimagining of this fantastic movie, one of my all-time favorites. As writers, we’re always told to ask, “what if?” If we do, then we are assured never-ending inspiration.

The next morning, I picked out a notebook and started making notes on this potential story. There are many things I need to flesh out, contemplate, and commiserate over, but I think there could be something to this idea.

Camp NaNoWriMo begins April 1, so I’m taking the month of March to prepare to write this book. I’m excited not only to see where this story might go, but also because I’ve always wanted to take something that I love and put my own spin on it!

Lesson learned: I need to keep my eyes and ears open and always ask “what if?”
